Woodness is not a common name.
On the electoral role for 2003 -2006 there were only 10 people with this surname listed in the UK. These are found in southern Scotland and Solihull and Southampton.
The name seems to have been much more widespread in the past and the fall in numbers may be due to women with the surname changing their names on marriage. One way of preserving female surnames is to either retain the surname on marriage or use two surnames, both is becoming increasingly common practice.
I searched old census returns and found that the name had been distributed around Durham, Yorkshire and the London area.
I also searched the Latterday Saints genealogy site and found the name in greater numbers in Durham, Yorkshire and again London , some of the parish records dated back to 1618. The name was also found in Alloa in Scotland.
The name was spelt Woodness, Woodniss, Woodnis and Woodnass in the past.
