What Is Time & How Can It Be Explained?

Philosophically thinking, I have tried to explain what time is by answering my grandson. But, there isn't really any way except to talk about the clock and atomic time.

A very long explanation, and not bad. I think I can make a more succinct definition of time however. Time is the experience perceived by the conscious mind between two events. Or it is a derived means of measurement between two events. Either way, without consciousness time is meaningless.... Hmmmm could the universe be conscious....

What is it? Will there ever be enough time to understand what time is or how long it has existed?

The only way to say when time began is to use the word "time" itself.  Such a circular definition is no definition at all.

Scientists have explained their proof that the earth began 4.5 billion years ago.  Before then, there was space where billions of stars and objects.  How long were they there?  That time cannot be measured even though scientists can measure the age of various objects from space that land on the earth or are found through space exploration.

Today scientists continue to find new objects and substances farther and farther from the earth.  They continue to learn about planet earth from its atmosphere to its outer surface and toward its inner core.  Each new discovery is explained in time, the one thing that they cannot define.

Human life on the earth is defined in time. History is recorded in time.  Our lives are lived in units of time.  We have no power over time.  Persian Poet Omar Khayyam wrote that the finger of time moves on and we have no power to cancel it.

We can turn back the hands on a clock and the pages of a calendar, but we cannot change even one moment of time.  Time itself does not allow the past to become the present nor the present to become the past.

There is no future.  There is only now, the now that instantly becomes the past.  We say, "in no time at all" as if that is possible.  We even say, "give me a little time" as if someone can do that.

Before anything else became, time was there.  When all else is gone, time will continue to be what it is.

For humanity to define time, its beginning and its end, is as difficult as it is to define God, the Creator, the Great Spirit.  The name of God as used in all the earth is irrelevant; however, the Creator of all that was, is and will be is like time.  No name or definition can be given by anyone on the earth that explains either time or God.
