It depends where you live ~ the best thing to do is phone your council to ask. Most councils in the UK now routinely collect from private homes:
Paper products, including envelopes (with plastic windows removed), newspaper, magazines and cardboard, as long as they're not soiled with food.
Certain plastics, particularly for drink and shampoo bottles.
Steel cans, such as most of the round 'tins' used to sell canned vegetables and other foods.
Green products (suitable for composting)
If you're willing to make a trip to the tip, they may also have facilities for recycling:
Glass (except not usually window panes)
Miscellaneous metals, such as staples, aluminium foil, metal jar lids (even if they have a plasticised coating on them).
All types of batteries (these may also be collected in some electrical goods stores)
Shoes and textiles (such as old clothes, towels and sheets)
Many businesses and schools also collect old mobile phones and printer cartridges for recycling.
One way to 'recycle' old consumer goods that might otherwise go to landfill is to offer them on the FREECYCLE email list for your area. This is also a good way to ask about whether any charities in your area that collect old bicycles, spectacles and computer equipment (all those can go to developing world) or unused paint (can be redistributed to charities in your area).
