The first motorway was inaugurated in Milan on September 21st, 1921. The motorway was built by Autostrada dei laghi. This motorway linked Milan to Varese. It was designed by an engineer named  Piero Puricelli. The motorway expenses were covered in a way, by introducing toll, which had to be paid by every vehicle that passed that way.

This motorway was designed to carry huge traffic between cities. In the United Kingdom the motorway has usually three roads in one direction with grade seprated access. These motorways were built to provide motormen with high speed to move between cities.

A motorway structure is generally, a two lane flyover with four slip roads, two on each side for entrance and exit. In the United States there are many motorways maintained throughout the country as it is a part of the Interstate Highway System.
