What Is The Past And Present Of Iowa?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The comparative study of the Iowa tribe involves a very scientific approach and time specific analysis. The name Iowa literally means 'the sleepy ones'. This is in no way an indication that the tribe was or is in any way lazy or inactive. In fact, they are probably the most low-profile tribe existent, since medieval times. The tribe follows a distinct dress-code and behavior pattern, with the survival and longevity of the tribe, its customs, culture and beliefs at the helm.

The Iowa tribe is known for a lot of movement. They have shifted base over the years, a number of times. Their original base was the beautiful and pristine Kansas and Nebraska. The origin of the tribe dates back to the times when the Sioux stock thrived. In fact, the Sioux stock is considered their ancestor. Sadly, the changes in history and politics did not evade the tribe. The Prairie Chien Treaty of 1825 was responsible for the tribe moving out of Minnesota, after surrendering their land. A number of other treaties and agreements that followed witnessed the clan migrating to land assigned to them by the US government.

Today, the tribe inhabits 416 acres of allotted land and 1272 acres of tribal land. The tribe is spotted across Brown County, Kansas, Richardson County, Nebraska and northeast of Hiawatha. The tribe currently has 2580 members and is taken care of by the US law.
