The central point of the Buddhist belief is the "middle way". Siddhartha Gautama (the first Buddha) theorized this lifestyle after he lived too extreme lifestyles. First, he was born into resplendence, his family was very wealthy and very powerful. After witnessing a beggar in the street one day, so the story goes, Siddhartha renounced his wealth and position and chose an Ascetic life (living in squalor, filth, and starvation). Finding that neither of these lifestyles fulfilled him spiritually, he adopted the mantra of the middle way: Not overindulging in luxuries, while also not depriving one's self of them.
