Dred Scott was basically an African Slave owned by Dr. John Emerson. After the death of John Emerson, he was handed over to Dr. John's brother in law John Sanford. Dred Scott claimed that he was living in a state where slavery was illegal so he should be freed. And John Sanford's holding him as slave was illegal
