The first American president, contrary to popular belief, was John Hanson, not George Washington. The role of president was initially defined as a one year term, so John Hanson served as president from November 5, 1781 to November 3, 1782. The complete ratification of the Articles of Confederation marked the beginning of presidential figures, seven of which (including Hanson) came before Washington. Washington was the first to be president under the newly formed Constitution.
