A potion is a liquid or liquid mixture which has can be magical or medicinal.  A potion can also be poisonous. The word potion comes from the Latin word "potio" which implies "poisonous beverage."

Legendary and mythical tales talk about the wondrous power of the magical concoction, the potion, which was used to heal, hypnotise, charm, bewitch or even poison people to death. A potion was usually prescribed to people by magicians, witches or quacks. One of the famous potions was the love potion which caused a person who hated the other to complete forget the hatred and fall in love after consumption of the potion.  Potions were also believed to be used in alchemy, a process for turning base metals to gold. Certain healing medicines in the form of a potion which were recommended by quacks have now been replaced or modified into patent medicines.

Potions are infusions made by soaking herbs in hot water. Usually used and thought about as "witches brew", but really, when you make a cup of tea, you are creating a potion. Another type of potion is using the stones, or "pips" of a fruit, such as an avocado, which, when peeled, sliced and boiled a certain way and then made into a cup of tea can stop stomach problems e.g. Vomiting and diarrhea.
