Triple Fusion is a procedure that is carried out to "fuse" or stiffen the three main joints of the back part of the foot.
There are two main reasons for carrying out this operation. The first is where a previous injury has damaged the joint and caused arthritis of the joints. The joint could be wearing out for other reasons and also caused arthritis.
The second reason is where there is severe deformity of the foot for example "flat foot", a club foot or some other deformity. These can sometimes ba corrected by breaking and reshaping the bone but in some cases stiffening the joints to the corrected position is the best option.
Someone who has a foot deformity may also have a tight Achilles tendon. There is an operation that can be done to lengthen this by making three small cuts in the calf and stretching the tendon.
