British enterprise, Lloyd's is a world leader in the insurance industry. Lloyd's is not really an insurance company, but is a British insurance market of members. Its origins date back to 1774, but it was incorporated by the Lloyd's Act in 1871, and presently it is governed by the Lloyd's Acts of 1871 through to 1982.

Lloyd's does not underwrite insurance business itself, but leaves that to its members, who come together under Lloyd's to pool and spread risk.
The Council of Lloyd's, which is an 18 member body, functions as the governing body, and is the equivalent of a company's board of directors. The Council is responsible for the administration of the Corporation of Lloyd's.  The Corporation of Lloyd's is responsible for the functioning of Lloyd's' various services and administrative operations.
