The Irish tended to be less well educated and in lower paid employment then their counterparts on the mainland. This was not of their own making.

The history of Ireland is well worth studying for a wider understanding of this question. The problems were deep rooted and buried in the social, economic and politcal condition of that country sice the Norman Conquest.

Many of us in britain today have at least one Irish ancestor, many countries across the world where influenced by the Irish Diaspora.

By the C19 Ireland was experiencing a popualtion boom but had a poor economy, in an agrarian country were the mass of the popualtion depended on the potato as staple diet to feed large families. Ireland had always suffered mini-famines but that of 1845-1850 was a catastrophe. Hundreds of thousands of Irish people flooded into the large cities, notably Liverpool , Manchester and Glasgow. These often destitute and disoriented people sometimes brought fever and cholera as a result of their poor health. there are many excellent books on the subject.
