How Many Soldiers Die In World War One?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Estimates vary, but around 10 million (10,000,000) soldiers of all belligerents lost their lives in the First World War. (About another 9 million civilians died.)

Several answers have been added for this question, but note that the question asks specifically about military deaths. (All figures given here are necessarily approximate since record keeping in 1918 was not as precise as now.)

    • The Allies, including the Americans reported about 5.5
million soldiers killed. The Central Powers reported about 4.5 million
soldiers killed, for a total military death toll of about 10 million.
    • When wounded and missing are added in, military casualties of all types total something over 40 million.
    • i read somewhere that the death toll was around 22 million men. This figure is accurate enough for total deaths, military and civilian combined.
    • Over 50,000 American soldiers were killed in action in World War I. The total count climbed to a little over 100,000.
