Is The White Mountain Range Really That White?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The mountain range is located in Peru. The ice cap which sits atop Cordillera Blanca, the largest glacier chain in the tropics is melting fast due to the rise in temperature, and the peaks are turning brown.
This is being added to the body of evidence by those who support global warming that it is mankind which is causing the dramatic climate change. Scientists say that the loss of the glacier could endanger future water supplies to the arid coast of Peru where most of the population live.
Some glaciologists consider that the condition of the glaciers is an indicator of global warming and they warn that what is happening here signals trouble in the future.
Quelccaya in southern Peru, the world's largest tropical ice cap is receding at a rate of approximately 200 feet a year. In the 60's it was only 20 feet a year. The meltdown is also apparent in other south American countries – Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.
