Where Were Sonic Youth From?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sonic Youth was formed in 1981, in New York City. The band lineup consists of Thurston Moore on guitars and vocals, Lee Ranaldo on guitars, vocals and organ, Kim Gordon on bass guitar, guitar, and vocals, and Steve Shelley on drums.

Early in their career, Sonic Youth were associated with what came to be called the No Wave art and New York City's music scene. Unlike most of their contemporaries they have however survived the changing times.

They were part of the first wave of post-punk groups. Sonic Youth spread their interpretation and perception of the punk rock ethos in the evolving American indie underground. Their focus was more on the punk DIY ethic rather than the specific sound. They have enjoyed moderate mainstream success, and had been stated as one of the best alternative rock groups of their time, by many.
