The U.S. Has 50 states. 48 are in the contiguous U.S., Alaska is "separated" by a slice of Canada and Hawaii is a chain of islands off the coast of the state of California. Illinois, is in the central part of the country -- the region is known as the Midwest. Hope that helps!!!!
