What Does Cowper. In The Following Webster's Definition Refer To? "5. Hence, A Substitute; A Hostage. --Cowper."

I am using an online dictionary as a reference for the definition of some words and I am uncertain as to meaning and/or reference made by the inclusion of --Cowper. In one of the definitions in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1913). Hoping to get some clarity on the matter.

This is a reference to the 18th century English poet William Cowper. It's probably from his poem "The Conversation" which contains a reference to Christ acting as a "surety" to mankind.
