    The two main islands off the mainland of Italy are the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

    The island of Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It covers a total surface area of 25, 700 square kilometres. According to the 2006 census of population figures, the population of the island of Sicily is about 5, 017,212. The capital of Sicily is Palermo. Apart from the province of Palermo, Sicily is divided into eight other provinces, namely Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Ragusa, Syracuse and Trapani.

    The island of Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It covers a total surface area of 24, 090 square kilometres. According to the 2006 census of population figures, the population of the island of Sardinia is about 1, 655,677. The capital of Sardinia is Cagliari. Apart from the province of Cagliari, Sicily is divided into seven other provinces, namely Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio, Oristano and Sassari.
