SAD is the abbreviation for Seasonal Affective Disorder. This condition is also known as winter depression. It is an affective disorder or a mood disorder. People who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are in a good state of mental health for most of the year, but suffer from SAD only during a particular season, usually the summer or winter season.

SAD is a rare condition, and most of the SAD sufferers reside in the countries having a tropical climate. The maximum number of cases of SAD exist in countries that are situated at latitudes of 30 degrees to the north or the south of the equator. Most people who suffer from SAD are affected by unipolar depression. But it is not uncommon for people in an advance stage of the condition to develop a manic-depressive state or suffer from bipolar depression.

Bipolar depression affects about one in every five SAD sufferers. The common methods of treatment of SAD include cognitive therapy, ionised-air reception, light therapies and medication.
