How Can I Obtain A Title To A Vehicle Owned By An Insurance Company?

Answer Question

If the vehicle belonged to you and was a write off, then the insurance company retains the wreck and takes this into account when making the settlement with a policy holder.

However, the policy holder can ask to retain the write off and have this fact reflected in the settlement payment. The insurance company will, though, want to know what you intend doing with wreck, for example, repairing it yourself or breaking it up for spares.

If you don't own the vehicle in question, you will need to find out who the insurer is and the policy number. You will normally have to speak to the previous owner for these details. Sometimes this is not possible, of course, and you would then have to ask the recovery company about the insurance company and write to the underwriter's with the vehicle's registration plate.

Vehicle write offs are usually sold on for spares or crushed. Depending on the extent of the damage, some are sold on as repairable. To avoid cut and shut operations, there has been a toughening of the law in this area and so you can expect a visit from the police to confirm the vehicle's identity when you put the vehicle back on the road.
