The ritual followed by the Condomble religion, called torque can be divided into two distinct parts which are:
    1. The preparation: The first part of the torque which is a ritual of the Candomble religion is called the preperation and this stage or this part is only, attended by the priests and the initiates of the religion. This part, the preparation of the Torque may start as much as a week in advance of the second part of the ritural; and  this part, the prepartion also consists of a festive public "mass" or gathering for prayers, along with a banquet which starts in the late evening and ends somewhere near midnight.

In the first part of the ritual, the initiates and the aides are required to wash and iron the costumes that are required for the ceremony, and they then decorate the house with the paper flags and the festoons, in the colors that are favored by the Orixas which are to be honored on the occasion. They also have to prepare food for the banquet that has to follow the mass.

Some domestic animals, in the first part of the ritual, are also slaughtered; some parts of the slaughtered animal are reserved for sacrifice, while the rest is prepared as food for the banquet. On the actual day of the torque ceremony, starting early in the morning, the cowrie-shell divinations which are also known as jogo de búzios, are performed, and the sacrifices are offered to the desired Orixás or dieties, and also to the messenger spirit who is also known as Exú in Ketu.
