The dubious honour of being the player to have been sent off the most belongs to former Scotland international Willie Johnston.  

In his professional career Johnston was sent off on no fewer than twenty one times.  Johnston was sent off whilst playing for four different clubs and once for the Scottish national side.  His roll call of shame includes seven dismissals for Glasgow Rangers, six for West Bromwich Albion.  Johnston was also sent off four times whilst playing abroad for Vacoiver Whitecaps.  He was also sent off on three occasions for Edinburgh side Hearts.  

Roy McDonough was also sent off twenty one times in his playing career but eight of these dismissals came whilst he played non league football.  His thirteen league sendings off came in his journey man career whilst Roy McDonough was wearing the colours of Birmingham City, Walsall, Chelsea, Colchester United, Southend United, Exeter City and lastly for Cambridge United.
