Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Bournemouth the biggest town in Dorset but formerly in Hampshire retains a large pier and a high retired population. It "moved" counties in 1974 when reorganisation decided that Bournemouth and Poole (on the border with Dorset) should both be incorporated the county.

Poole with a large natural harbour serves as a ferry port, has a huge marina and hosts many yachting events. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution HQ is also based there.

Dorchester, the county town and historic Roman settlement is associated with the famous writer Thomas hardy.  Its architecture is varied and ranges from medieval through all periods of history.

Swanage used to be a small fishing port until the seaside boom began under the Victorians and soon became a popular destination for sea bathing.  It still retains a small, old 19th century wooden pier.

Weymouth also a tourist centre with a harbour and nearby Portland harbour will host the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics.
