What Is The Last Of Trollope's "Palliser" Novels?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is "The Duke's Children" published in 1880. A poor young Conservative politician (Frank Treagar) loses his chance to marry Lady Mary Palliser, daughter of the duchess of Omnium, when the duchess dies and her father, a Liberal, disapproves of the match. Meanwhile the duke's son, Lord Silverbridge, is causing anxiety with his wild behaviour and gambling debts (he loses £70,000 in a single bet.) His father suggests that marriage might be a calming influence, which encourages Silverbridge to admit his love for Lady Mabel Grex, Treagar's penniless cousin. The duke is about to give permission for this marriage when Silverbridge changes his mind and falls in love with an "upstart" American girl, Isabel Boncassen. Eventually, won over by Isabel's charm, the duke approves this match, and also allows his daughter to marry Treagar, whose hard work and successful career have impressed him. Treagar even gains a seat in Parliament.
