What Is The History Of Covent Garden?
Answers
Covent Garden in London derives its name from its location on the site of the original covent garden of the Abbey of St. Paul at Westminster. It is an area bound by Charing Cross Road, the Strand, Kingsway, High Holborn and Shaftesbury Avenue. In the 1630s the Earl of Bedford hired Indigo Jones to design the square as a habitat 'fit for gentlemen'. Jones created the Church of St. Paul's which overlooked tall townhouses. The houses are all gone now. The high-brow vision for the Square has waned through the years as brothels, taverns and coffeehouses have moved in and out of the neighbourhood. Yet, today the style and refinement of Covent Garden remain. You can visit the Royal Opera House, the Theatre Museum or enjoy great shopping at the Piaza. The elegant architecture of Indigo Jones' Church of St. Paul's stands intact for vistors to enjoy.
