A two-stroke engine runs on petrol and it completes one cycle of rotation in only 2 strokes while a four-stroke engine runs on diesel and needs four strokes to complete one cycle.

No...a 2 sroke engine can also be a diesel engine.basically 2 stroke and 4 stroke differs in the number of power or working stroke per cycle.in 2 stroke power sroke comes in each cycle but in 4 stroke 1 power stroke requires 2 cycles.
2 stroke has intake of gases and exhaust of burned gases are simultaneosly done with compression and expansion stroke.whr in 4 stroke these are separate stages.

No it is not essential . Four stroke engine also works on petrol
In two stroke two revolutions of a crankshaft completes a cycle but in four stroke four revolutions completes a cycle

Yes prashant07 is correct when he said a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke can be diesel... But to add to his comment the cycle works in that way and this eliminated the need for valves on the 2 stroke (unless it has loop scavenge which means there would be one exhaust valve on the cylinder head) but Theres room for another thought with regards to the construction of the 2 types of engine. The big difference between a 4 stroke and a 2 stroke is that a two stroke has an under piston space (connected with the scavenge space) which separates the cylinder liner and the crankcase (sump) HOWEVER on a 4 stroke the liner is open to the atmosphere in the sump.
