I just got two lhaso aspso dogs (forgive the spelling) and one of them tried to eat his own poo as soon as he is done. Is that a sign of a serious problem ?

This is called coprophagia. Puppies often do this, especially if someone has made the mistake of rubbing their nose in it as a "punishment", also if they have been left in a dirty area for too long when younger. Obviously it is not nice and is unhygienic to do this. Make sure he is wormed and that you are feeding him enough. Easiest way to do this is to weigh him at the same time each day. A pup should gain a little weight every day, say a couple of ounces, until adult size is reached. Clear up his poo promptly. You can buy pills at pet stores which you add to the dogs poo to make it taste nasty.

How old are the dogs? I used to work for a vet, and while there seems to be no particular reason for this behavior, it primarily results from boredom! The vets I worked for said that the deterrent additives are added to the dog's food, but they don't seem to work all that well.

I don't think it is a problem. I have seen many dogs do it. It s disgusting and any time I catch my dog doing it I tell him NO he doesn't really do it more. My guess though........ Hunger? I know they eat grass if they have an upset stomach. Either way I say gross!
