    Brest initially known as Brest-on-the-Bug and Brest-Litovsk is basically a city, situated in Belarus positioned close to the Polish border where the Western Bug and Mukhavets River meet.

    The total population of this region according to the census conducted in the year 2004 was 290,000. It is also the capital city of Brest Voblast. Being placed on the key Berlin-Moscow railway line and on intercontinental highway, Brest became the chief border crossing since World War II. At present it connects the European Union with the Commonwealth of Independent States.

    This city was discovered by Slavs. It was initially mentioned as Berestye in the Russian Primary Chronicle in the year 1019 as a town based in Kievan Rus. It was restrained many times by Poland and Lithunia and eventually occupied by the Mongols in the year 1241.
