Is It True That People Who Lived At Your Address Before You Can Affect Your Credit Rating?

Answer Question

Almost three-quarters of us think so - but almost three-quarters of us are wrong.  Credit checks are carried out all the time, but on people, not their addresses.

And lenders can't look through details of people who've lived at your address before you when they're checking your credit files.

Lenders used to be allowed to look at  (and take into account) the credit histories of people with the same surname and address as you, but now, by law, they've got to look at you as an individual.

So that means it's your credit report they're looking at, and they're looking for missed payments, court judgements, bankruptcy, defaulted accounts and multiple loan or credit applications.

And it also means that if you're considering making an application for a loan or mortgage, it's worth checking your credit report beforehand to make sure a) all the information there is correct, and b) you're not a victim of identity theft.

I hope you don't live in the UK, cos I see many things that aren't correct here if you do.
