During the 16th century, the American colonies used Horses as mode of transportation. They also used horse led carts for travelling especially where women and children were concerned. Or in most of the cases they had to travel by foot.

The 16th century would be the !500's so their were no "American" colonies. Perhaps St. Augustine in Florida settled by the Spanish in the !580's.  Transportation was primarily if not exclusively pedestrian.
