My Dog Has Bad Breath. What Can I Do?

We don't brush his teeth. But is there any other way to at least lessen the smell?

If your dog's bad breath is due to dental tarter then your dog needs a dental cleaning.  Your dog will undergo general anesthesia and then his teeth will be scaled and polished just like at our dentist.  Your veterinarian will get the tarter off, clean below the gumline, and assess the health of the teeth.  If there are any loose teeth, abscessed teeth, or dead teeth they will need to be extracted.  Also during the dental cleaning a full oral exam will be done to make sure there are no oral masses, foreign bodies, or any other lesions causing the odor.
An uncommon side effect of kidney disease is called uremic breath (this smells very bad).  A bloodwork panel should be done pre-anesthetically to screen the liver and kidneys ensuring they can handle the anesthesia.
The best home care includes teeth brushing, dental rawhides, and dental gel/rinses.  Ask your veterinarian for more details.

What do you do if you can't brush his teeth because he bites?
My dog will not let anyone near his mouth or blind side. Everywhere else is fine for him. I have a daschund. (He's 12.) They are very finicky.

My dog has to undergo the whole dental procedure this coming week. They will be removing a few teeth I know for sure and I'm hoping he makes it through ok let alone the bad breath will be gone. (Crosses fingers). I'm worried about the whole thing.
