    Dogs itch due to a number of reasons other than fleas, ticks which are different from fleas cause great discomfort to dogs. Another reason could be an allergic reaction to a substance which might be related to diet is known to cause itching in dogs.

    The condition in which a dog experiences itchiness is known as pruritis and is said to be caused due to chemical reactions triggered in the skin due to various reasons. Dry skin is another reason why dogs itch; the condition can be treated by various lotions. Bacterial infections and fungal growth are one of the major reasons that could cause a dog to itch considerably.

    For short term relief applying cold water would provide relief though a visit to the vet is a must if the dog scratches itself continuously. Depending on the cause remedies include fatty acid derivatives, antibiotics and antihistamines are useful in treating itchiness.

      A dog can have skin allergies, just as humans do. They can also have dry skin which would make them itch. Another reason is stress. Some dogs when stressed or afraid can manifest this by scratching.
