Depending on the model of laptop you have...
Some laptops use 2 sata drives and have the capability of using low level raid. Raid level 1 allows you to use one drive and the second drive is a mirror image of the first drive. If one drive fails you can replace it and life goes on.
You can also use raid level 0, which does use both drives simultaneously. This makes for much faster data access, but if one drive fails you loose ALL your data, operating system etc. If you go this route or are thinking about it...learn about how to take regular BACKUPS of your drives so you can recover from a disk failure.
