Diabetes is a condition in which the level of blood sugar (glucose) increases in the blood due to lack of the hormone insulin which regulates blood sugar levels produced by the pancreas, leading to complications in the working of various organs and other related life processes.

There are mainly two types of diabetes; Type 1 also known as Insulin Dependent Diabetes found in people below 35 years of age and Type 2 or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes generally found in people above 35 years of age.

Type 1 diabetes characterized by the failure of the pancreatic beta cells to produce insulin involves taking insulin shots on a regular basis along with certain changes in diet like and lifestyle in general. Type 2 diabetes linked to obesity can be controlled with the help of a proper diet and exercise regime with good results.

Gestational diabetes occurs in some cases during pregnancy (2-5%) is temporary and curable but requires medical supervision. Some kinds of diabetes are caused due to genetic defects, disease of the pancreas or due to use of toxic chemicals and drugs.
