Three things:
Over filling. If someone put too much transmission fluid in it could leak out through vents or parts on the top of the transmission.
Over heating. When transmissions get too hot the fluid expands and can then leak out.
Leaky part. A hose or a seal can just leak.
Of course to figure out exactly why there is a leak will need some more information: What car/engine/year/transmission?
