If you are going to join a gym, it is important that you choose one that suits your requirements. Firstly, look at the cost and the payment options. If you can only manage to go once a week, then a monthly fee would not be cost effective. If you can manage several times a week, paying each time you go would work out more expensive. Most gyms offer reduced fees if you pay for the year outright. If you choose this, make sure you go regularly.
Find out what the opening times are and whether everything is open at those times or whether there are restrictions. Check what equipment is available and whether it is up to date and well maintained. Decide whether it is equipment you would use. Look also for the amount of classes that are available, what variety they have and what times they are available. Check whether there is a pool and whether it is the right size for the swimming that you want to do.
Take a look at the changing rooms, to check whether they are clean and have ample facilities. Added extras such as hairdryers and body lotions can make a big difference to when and whether you use the gym. If there is a sauna and steam room, make sure that they are not at an additional cost. Make a note also of the attitude and attentiveness of the staff. If any of the staff do not appear well qualified or approachable, this could hinder your workout.
Think about the overall atmosphere of the gym. If you want just a serious workout, you could become jaded with a gym that is noisy and has lots of people chatting. If you want a sociable gym, see what clubs and outside activities are arranged. It is important that you do not compromise what you want; the gym has to fit around your life, not the other way around!
