Ouch, almost hurting yourself is not fun. The first thing you should probably do, if you haven't done it already, is try to become flexible.  I am in the same position as you, trying to learn the cheer tumbling.  Stretches make it easier to get yourself off the ground and to do jumps, stunts, and tumbling (such as front handsprings).  If you can do a back handspring then I would have someone watch your motions and then repeat them to you in reverse while you are trying to do a front handspring.  If not, I would try to practice handstands first.  Then, once you get good at them, just flip over.  If this doesn't work, an age old trick is using water.  I'm the worst person at tumbling ever, but getting in a pool makes it easier.  Get under water and then try it.  If it works, practice it over and over.  Then, try it on land again.  Hope this helps!!
