An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that certain electronic devices use to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP). In simpler terms, an IP address can be consider as computer address. You can consider an IP address equivalent of a street address or a phone number  for a computer or other network device on the Internet. Any participating network device can have their own unique address. Participating devices can be routers, computers, time-servers, printers, Internet fax machines, and some telephones. Just as each street address and phone number uniquely identifies a building or telephone, an IP address can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on a network.
There is a special format for writing IP address. It is written as a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example, 1.160.10.240 could be an IP address.
