Barkham is a village situated in Berkshire County in south eastern England in the vicinity of the town of Wokingham. Barkham is a civil parish coming under Wokingham district and accordingly administered jointly by the district unitary authority and parish councillors.
Barkham includes part of the area coming under the Arborfield army base and where most of the population of the village along with the area adjoining the post office is concentrated. The rural character of the village has remained unchanged in spite of market towns like Wokingham and Winnersh and Arborfield Cross situated nearby and the area is characterised by farmlands and woods.
The village has a long history of human settlement and the name of the village which means ‘Birch Home’ is believed to have come from birch woods in the region. The first mention of Barkham is in a Saxon chronicle dating from the 10th century and in the Domesday Book (1086) which is a compilation of a survey of property in England, undertaken by William the Conqueror to better administer the territory he had acquired.
