In late 1920, the modern gangster film got started. Showing two silent movies back to back. The first one was Underworld, released in 1927. Followed by The Racket released in 1928. The real blitz of crime movies came not only with sound, but also with exclusion and the despair. The movies like The Lights of New York which was released in1928. The movie stands among the first crime movies that had a gangster theme. Immediately followed little Caesar which was released in 1930.  The Public Enemy was released in 1931. Last two mentioned films got success to prove Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney as archetypical criminals.

George Raft played a coin-flipping hit-man role in the movie Scarface & in the movie The Shame of a Nation released in 1932.  After that movie a lot of men were reported to flip coins and looking cool like George Raft. Who had persistent his entire life with allegation he was mob connected. Raft had completed many movies yet he is top memorized for that fussy role. The Petrified Forest was completed by Humphrey Bogart in 1936. It was perceived as the equal of Cagney, but was not so.
