The Katyn massacre occurred in the times of World War II in Poland when it was occupied by German and Soviet troops. The massacre took place at Katyn forest in Poland where thousands of Polish prisoner of war as well as civilians were killed by the NKVD a Soviet government department and the secret police agency under orders from the Soviet leader Josef Stalin. The massacre took place in 1940 and came to light when in 1943 German troops in the area discovered mass graves.

It is estimated that more than 25,000 Poles were massacred by the NKVD at various prisoner of war camps in Poland and parts of Belarus and Ukraine; the entire incident is referred to as the Katyn massacre. The Soviet government acknowledged responsibility for the Katyn massacre on April 13, 1990 and released documents pertaining to the massacre to the Polish government; then Russian President Boris Yeltsin visited the site of the Katyn massacre in 1993.
