Conflict when used in the context of creative writing is often referred to as the engine that drives the story along. Works of fiction are dull if nobody ever disagrees or has doubts fears or worries or isn't faced with tricky choices. Conflict can be external and between characters. Rows and disagreements are obvious examples. Conflict can be internal. For example a character who is considering cheating on his wife might not act immediately because he is constrained by his own moral values. Conflict keeps readers engaged. For example in the classic romance boy meets girl needs some conflict to keep the story engaging. Conflict can lad to obstacles which also engage the reader. For example, a parnet grounding a teenage daughter following a conflict over lateness might raise the possibility of the teen defying herparents. The will she/won't she obey question can create suspense in the minds of the reader and offer the possibility of d=several dramatic outcomes. In this way conflict adds enormously to our enjoyment of fiction.
