Quercetin is a flavonoid, one of the family of chemicals that give pigment to plants. Many flavonoids are known to have various beneficial affects in the human body. The properties of quercetin are especially well studied. It is found in onions, apples, tea (black or green) and to a lesser extent, leafy greens, including brassicas, some berries, and beans. Quercetin from food sources may be superior to supplements, because of the other beneficial chemicals (glycones and rutin) found with it in foods

    Quercetin:

    Has anit-inflammatory, antioxident properties.

Prevents the "bad" cholesterol, LDL, from being damaged. LDL is believed to be more likely to cause heart disease when damaged.

May help limit blood vessel damage in diabetes sufferers that leads to kidney disease or blindness.

    Has anti bacterial properties.

Has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation in the postrate (for men suffering from postratitis).

Inhibits the creation and actions of T cells, so may reduce the likelihood of developing or severity of auto-immune disorders. May therefore be good for allergy sufferers, and is promoted in the sports community as a way to dampen down the affects of exercise-induced asthma.
