The philosophy behind the macrobiotic diet stress on the fact that the food we consume affects our overall health in various ways on the physical as well as the mental level and consequently has an effect on our life in general. It advises man to live in harmony with nature which would help him in living in harmony with his own body. The macrobiotic diet advises to consume food that has been cooked using traditional methods of cooking rather than consuming manufactured food.

The diet also has a distinctly spiritual base as is seen from its emphasis on the principle of Yin and Yang (property of duality and relativity) based on the food product its nature, appearance and the place where it has been grown. The diet advises that food consumed should include cereals (50%), vegetables, pulses, salads and fruits (40%), nuts and animal products in the right quantity for best results.
