What Can You Tell Me About Dorset?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Dorset, a county with a contrast of features from its high chalk hills, large wooded areas and deep valleys in the west and grassland heaths in the east. A rural county with a population of around 700,000, the main town is Bournemouth with 164,000 but Dorchester with only 16,000 is still the county town.

Dorchester was a major early Roman settlement and regular new finds of artifacts are unearthed continually even today. Tourism has taken over from agriculture as the main industry in Dorset and the county holds a high proportion of elderly people who have retired there.  In fact around 25% of the population is aged 65 and over.

The popular tourist coastal towns of Bournemouth, Weymouth, Poole, Swanage and Lyme Regis established during the Victorian era, swell in great numbers over the summer months.  Poole harbour is one of the largest in the world and claims to be second in size only to Sydney, Australia.
