What Language Was Spoken In Gaul?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Gaulish language was spoken in Gaul, and is a derivative of early Celtic. Gaulish is known from several inscriptions on ceramic vessels, stone, coins, occasionally metal such as lead, once on zinc, and on other artifacts. These are found in the area of Roman Gaul, mostly in the area of modern France and also parts of Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.

Ancient Gaulish was closer to Latin than modern Gaelic languages are to modern Romance languages.

The longest Gaulish text was found in 1983 in L'Hospitalet-du-Larzac in Aveyron. The text is in Latin cursive (any style of handwriting in which all the letters in a word are connected, making a word one single stroke) script. This was on two small sheets of lead and the content is a magical incantation, possibly a curse. The exact meaning of the text is unclear.

Gaulish language became extinct after the 6th century AD.
