What Does Symphony Mean Other Than Instruments?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A symphony basically means a piece which has been composed for a large orchestra. It is usually composed in about three to four movements. The first of the four movements is often in the form of a sonata. It is also known as a large orchestra. The four movements that make up a symphony are also known as the sections of the symphony.

The word symphony plainly means sounding together. It is an orchestral work which is of a serious nature and is fairly substantial in size. It is an elaborate composition that is usually composed for a full orchestra.

The famous German-born orchestra composer Ludwig van Beethoven (December 17, 1770 to March 26, 1827) composed nine symphonies by himself during what were known as the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music, and his Tenth Symphony was composed in collaboration with Barry Cooper. Symphonies are synonymous with Beethoven.

Symphony is a piece of large orchestra. It has three or four movements. It is a serious work of music. It literally means "sounding together'. One or the other movements in a symphony is generally a sonata. It originated during the 17th century and was found in operas, sonatas and concertos. The four major movement of a symphony are quick, slow, minuet or trio and quick.

The major difference between symphony and other orchestras are that a symphony is very elaborate and lengthy. It is more extended then other forms of orchestra. The two most known forms of orchestra are symphony orchestra and philharmonic orchestra. Thus a symphony is more complex and even employs a lot of unusual musical instruments at times which is not the case in other orchestras.

Other than instruments, it means working together beautifully or aesthetically.  The commonest phrase using this meaning is probably "a symphony of color" (or colors).

Web-search [symphony of color] for examples.
