What Does Protocol Mean?

The word protocol is defined as a precise and detailed plan which is made for the purpose of studying a biomedical problem or for understanding the regimen of an experimental therapy. It is also defined as the language spoken between two or more computers. It help the computers to exchange or share information. However, this is a crude definition of the term protocol.

A more technical definition of the word protocol in computer parlance is that it is a formal description of the formats in which messages can be sent and received to and from computers. It gives a detailed set of rules which every computer has to follow in order to facilitate the process of exchanging those messages.

On the Internet, the word protocol is usually used to define a set of rules which are laid down to define the exact format for the process of communication between two or more systems. The HTTP protocol defines the format for communication between web browsers and web servers.
