No! They are considered "armature" athlete's and can not be paid for performing the sport they participate in unless... There are definitions of a "professional" and "armature" which are rather Grey! US Pro basketball players are now pros as are other countries so it balances the equation? Other countries that are controlled, like Communist China support their athletes with housing, cars, cool places to live not quite like here but way better than others like here. Here, which is rather new is the athlete being paid to portray or be displayed in ad's that is not related to them being paid to be whatever the sport they participate in, so the athlete's here are on boxes and commercial, magazines etc and thus can compete which is totally cool with me.

Wrong oh my dear sir! They may get money but as part of the prize for placing! They cannot be paid for playing the sport. None of them get paid! They can win money as part of or as the reward for win, place or show! They cannot be paid for performing the sport! Check it out, that is what makes an amature an amature! Winning a prize is winning! Being paid to do the sport is a profession!
