The motivation driving genetic engineering, in most instances, is the vast potential for improving human life. This potential exists in many different forms such as improving the food we eat and, in more visible ways, developing treatments and cures for some of the most terrible diseases that afflict mankind. Yes, we have witnessed cloning as well, but that is not the foundation of genetic engineering.

The scope of the "ethical" work that can be pursued in this field is limitless. So many people around the world are suffering everyday--many of them needlessly. Improved food and medical resources could greatly reduce this scourge that affects all of us. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Yet, considerable resistance to any form of human cell manipulation exists from, primarily, religious groups oppose any research that utilizes the cells of human embryos in any research. They believe that the embryo is essentially a life and, as such, any use of embryonic tissue is tantamount to murder (in the extreme). Further, they fear that soon humans will be cloned.
These groups are politically powerful and have severely inhibited much research by refusing to fund such research.

They are entitled to their views and heavy-handed methods intended to significantly retard this important research. But, sooner or later, they will lose their grip as more and more independently funded research firms enter the fray. This is not some sort of novelty research being conducted. The positive implications of this primarily untapped research are so vast and far-reaching it boggles one's mind.

Support ethical genetic engineering always. Your life may depend on it twenty years from now.
